Ways to prevent Hair Loss during Chemotherapy
DigniCap is a scalp-cooling device that offers patients the ability to minimize hair loss during chemotherapy. The system works by two mechanisms. Number one is it reduces blood flow to the scalp during chemotherapy administration.
And number two is it decreases the metabolic or slows the growth of the hair follicle. And so by those two mechanisms, it decreases chemotherapy getting into the hair follicle, and you’re able to minimize hair loss during chemotherapy.
This is awesome, right? So, I mean, for women, one of the first things we see when we look in the mirror is our hair. It’s part of many women’s identities. So being able to minimize hair loss during chemotherapy, to me, offers an incredible quality of life during chemotherapy.
It’s been a great process. The days are long, but I expected that. It’s really cold, but once you get past the cold, after half hour or so, you breeze right through it. And I have all my hair, so.
This cover would go over the head so I’ll put it on for us, and then this would go over it as well. And ultimately, you want to get a good seal and get this cap as close to the scalp as possible. And then the cooling process starts 30 minutes prior to chemotherapy administration. It lasts throughout chemotherapy, and then for anywhere from 90 to 180 minutes following the end of chemotherapy for a cooldown process.
Patients have been so incredibly excited to use this. Patients have had such wonderful results, and it really, really gives people such a good quality of life during chemotherapy. They don’t feel like they’re sick when they look in the mirror, and that really goes a long way when you’re going through such a devastating traumatic process in your life.
It helps tremendously. Spirits stay high. You get excited when you see that your hair is still there. Family and friends will comment, which is even more encouraging, than fantastic.

It was originally approved only for breast cancer patients, but it actually, in the summer of 2017, was cleared for all solid tumor types. So not only breast cancer, also uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, etc, etc.
There is a fear of losing your hair. I think cancer scares me more than losing my hair. And when I thought about it, I thought, well, losing my hair wouldn’t be so bad. But then when I thought about it, even more, I thought losing my hair would not be bad, but growing my hair back would be terrible.
So I thought, I really need to get this capital a try because if I can save myself the time that it might take to grow all my hair back, it was certainly worth it to me. I hope that my success and the success of others who have kept I hope to give encouragement to others.
